Homemade Dog Food: What I feed my fur baby
I have a sweet one-year-old Chow Chow named Pascha whom I love to death. From the moment we decided to get Pascha, I knew I would cook for her because eating processed kibble only seems sad to me- no shame whatsoever to those who only feed kibble. It’s time-consuming, not always the most budget-friendly, and sometimes just not right for certain dogs with dietary issues or allergies. Regardless, there is no judgment here whatsoever to anyone who only feeds kibble.
Pascha still eats kibble every day as well (I mix it in her cooked food as well) because I want to be sure she’s getting all of the nutrients she needs and because sometimes there’s simply not enough time in the day to be cooking (even still- she eats more cooked food than I do).
I don’t cook a huge array of meals for her because I want to maintain a keen awareness of what foods in particular she likes, how different foods affect her, and so on. I feel that mixing things up too much might overwhelm her system and I also enjoy routine for the both of us.
Disclaimer: Always speak with your vet before cooking for your dog and/or making dramatic changes to their diet.
Here is Pascha's Favorite meal:
Ground Beef and Rice Bowls
Ingredients
Ground Beef
Jasmine Rice
Small Bag of Frozen Peas & Carrots
Parsley
Oregano
Turmeric (optional)
Steps
Heat water over the stove in a kettle.
Place ground beef in a bowl (the amount varies based on your dog’s size and needs) and sprinkle parsley and oregano over it. I like to mash the seasoning in with a fork.
Prepare rice in a rice cooker with parsley and oregano. Turmeric is optional for added flavor and nutritional benefits.
While those things are cooking, take a small bag of frozen peas and carrots out and place it in a bowl of warm/hot water.
Once your kettle is whistling, pour hot water on the ground beef- just enough to cover it. You’re going to let that sit now.
Keep checking your peas and carrots and ensure they’re thawing out.
Once your rice is done cooking, mix in thawed-out peas and carrots.
Drain excess water from meat.
Scoop rice into the bowl with meat and voila!
